Today, I finished reading the Book of Mormon. I’m not sure how many times I’ve read the book all the way through, to be honest my reading probably has been more lop sided as I start, then get off track and start again. It felt so good to get all the way through again. I love this book. I have a testimony that this book will bring you closer to your Savior Jesus Christ. I love the words of Isaiah, Nephi, Lehi, Alma, Alma the Younger, and many others. This time through was such a special experience as I took the time to highlight the references of Jesus Christ. Then I marked where Christ himself was speaking either through the prophets or personally. This was a powerful experience as I felt as if the Savior were speaking to me personally. I truly believe everytime I pick up the scriptures that there is a message just for me that will help me in whatever situation I may be in at the time. God truly is mindful of us.
As I ponder what messages stood out to me this time, I realize that the spirit has blessed me with much personal insight for which I am grateful. I acknowledge the blessings of the Lord in my life. To begin with, I really love how the Lord speaks through His prophets. They truly are a mouthpiece of the Lord. I can’t begin to count the number of times I read “thus saith the Lord” or other similar expressions followed by His personal words to the people of that time and to us in this day.
I love that this book was preserved to be brought forth in our day and testifies of things that we must do to prepare for the second coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. The prophecies and warnings of things to come are a great reminder that I need to continue to prepare. Yet, I also know that peace can be found admist the storms. I too have experienced this as I have sought heavenly help from above. If you are curious about what it teaches about our day, I invite you to get a copy of the Book of Mormon and read it for yourself. I promise you that if you read it with an open mind, humbling yourself before God and praying to know if it is true, you will receive an answer.
I testify that the workings of the Holy Spirit are real and present while reading this book. I have felt the tender mercies of the Lord many times as I have opened and read from the pages. I also testify that the Bible is the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. The Bible has been through many hands over the generations, and many precious and plain parts were removed or alterted from the original words and intent. However, we are blessed that as we treasure up the words of these beautiful scriptures, obey the commandments of the Lord, and pray to know the truth of all things, that the mysteries of Heaven can be shown to us. This is not something to be taken lightly, and one must dedicate themselves to the study of God’s word and look unto Him regularly through study, prayer, listening to and obeying prophets and personally pondering and applying what is taught. This also involves applying the atonement of Jesus Christ on a daily basis, repenting daily from mistakes and correcting ourselves.
This time reading the Book of Mormon, I felt a love for the Prophet Alma the Younger and his words did touch me deeply. I love what I refer to as the personal letters that he wrote to his sons. I could relate with him and see all the love that a tender parent has for his sons. I feel the same love for my own children. I believe the Lord would have us all hearken to the counsel given by this loving father in Alma Chapters 36 – 42. I believe his words to his sons are a great measuring stick to see how I am doing. Is there something I need to stop, start or continue? If my father or Heavenly Father were sharing these words with me, would I be humble and obedient or would I resist and be difiant and rebell against God’s word? Would I seek my Savior to help change that which needs to be changed? Do I have things I need to repent of? Do I seek to please my Heavenly Father or do I seek more for the praise of mankind? Do I trust more in the arm of flesh (individuals I surround myself with) over the promptings of the spirit, words of prophets and apostles, or the words of the scriptures?
I have had many thoughts come to mind, simply too personal to share. My invitation to you is to get a copy of the Book of Mormon for yourself and read it cover to cover with an emphasis on hearing the word of Christ that you may have your own personal experiences. Pay attention to how you feel. You can download an app and read the book right from your phone by downloading Gospel Library or the Book of Mormon all by it’s self. This book is true and it will help you feel closer to your Savior Jesus Christ. I invite you to write down thoughts and impressions that come as you read that invite you to improve your life and set some personal goals. Have some life challenges, struggles or trials you are going through? Take some questions with you before you begin reading, and listen for and write down thoughts as they come. It will truly be a beautiful experience.
